shellac
> 1,000 hurts > touch n go /// please
note
A deliciously
brutal album, perfect for anyone who's ever been dumped in favour
of some one else. It would appear that Mr Albini (or some altar
ego) has been the victim of infidelity, if lyrics such as "What
made you think you could put your cock inside my wife?" ("Canaveral")
are anything to go. And he's clearly not very happy about it.
Okay, so Shellac albums are never very happy-go-lucky affairs,
but right from track one it's obvious that our Steve is VERY
PISSED OFF. A sample lyric from "Prayer to God", curdled over
the customary Shellac muscle: "I don't care if it hurts/Yes
I do, I want it to/Kill him, fucking kill him/Kill him already/Kill
him!" Get the picture? Tremendously satisfying.
And the music delivers too. Steve's guitar sounds like tearing
sheet metal as always, while Bob Weston and Todd Trainer cook
up the usual beef stew, and both step up to the mic for a change
(at least I think it's them). Shellac are all about intensity,
to my ears, and this is their most intense record yet. JM |
