Wolves! (Of Greece) have been
creating a bit of a stir lately with their reportedly gloriously
loud live show. While I've yet to experience this (including missing
a recent support for Lightning Bolt), their debut self-titled 10"
gives me a pretty good idea of what to expect.
The music is a chaotic slow-motion
car crash of squalling guitars and thuddering rhythmic clatter.
The twin guitars seemingly duel each other to death, swooping and
squealing before throwing out a few Stooges-meets-Truman's Water
type riffs that rollercoaster throughout each song. If this weren't
uncomfortable enough then you also have a vocal style that's unsettlingly
unconventional, an almost falsetto stream of consciousness that's
all late-night flickering-light paranoia and anguish. Think Giovanna
Cacciola from Uzeda without the primal scream and the pasta.
These aren't songs to sing
along to but sounds and emotions to experience, and while it might
not be much of a fun ride, like the best rollercoasters you always
find yourself queuing up for more.
