Ah, an old-skool split 7"...
The Pernath side is charming in that Shrimper back catalogue/Cannanes
detuned guitar and slightly dodgy vocals way. While some might say
that Calvin Johnson has a lot to answer for, for me the fact that
bands like this still exist is reason enough to applaud. That and
the fact that these two songs are actually really good.
I have to admit Eric Gaffney's
contributions to Sebadoh albums tend to be the ones I don't bother
transferring to my ipod. While sandwiched between Lou's hopelessly
lovely balladeering they are fine, individually they can be a little
wearing. And while these two songs actually a pretty good attempt
to steer clear of the wacky side, I think they'll need a good few
more listens for their merit to truly shine through.
