The Anticon crowd have become
indie hip hop untouchables over the last couple of years for their
lyrical and sonic innovation. But I have to admit that some fatigue
is setting in for me, their dense brand of "shrink-rap" sometimes
a little too impenetrable for these ADS days. But Alias I always
have time for. True he tends to be one of the straighter members,
but then he clearly hasn't forgotten the beauty and power of a good
melody married to a good beat, and isn't afraid to keep it simple.
This latest 12" is a case
in point - electronic burbles and twinkles with a head-nodding beat,
and one Markus Archer (anyone tell me who he is?) actually singing
over the top - surely an Anticon first? I'm going to keep coming
back to this one every time I want a little melody in my life. The
flip side displays a little more of the angry Alias displayed on
his last album, so don't worry, he hasn't gone totally soft.
Incidentally, this is much
more the kind of thing I'd expect from melodic electronica label
Morr Music than Sole's Man's Best Friend album, which I've so far
found just too too much - I just can't get into it.
