It
seemed like a good idea to put together a complete list of Kylie stuff,
since one doesn't exit. Largely for my own purposes since this is of
limited interest to most people, but hey it's my website. Didn't I release
a lot...
*If
any of the bands object to their mp3s being included here just let me
know and I'll take them out and burn them immediately*
001
deliberately lo-fi C90 Aha,
the release that started it all. Inspired by a trip to Rough Trade in
Covent Garden, which was full of nifty compilation tapes featuring bands
like Huggy Bear, Blood Sausage, Pram, and Mambo Taxi, I figured I could
do that pretty easily, and hey you know what? I did. Compilation with
26 bands including 70 Gwen Party, Boyracer, TUOB, Hood, Hem, Spine,
Peepshow, Fink, Steve Andrews, Xerox Girls, Moneyspider, and Corradi
Kid. Kylie's most popular tape.
Download: Hood "picture
of telegraph at 45" | Boyracer "glamour
on a shoestring" | 70 Gwen Party "apollow"
002 GRUUTHARGY C30 You know I have
very little recollection of this, apart from the fact that it was really
noisy and dirty sounding.
003 SPACEHOPPER i smell stuff
C30 Simon sent me this little tape of songs, no idea how we came across
each other.
004 FATHER Dancing Major
C45 Raucous lo-fi pop songs to make your heart beat faster. Universally
acclaimed, actually.
Download:
"dancing major"
"in my lo-fi world"
006 TUOB Remixes C30 Collaborations
with The Allstars, Steve Andrews, The Infant Cycle, NOISELESS, and J.W.
Cody.
007 OKANIWA FUMIHIRO Asabaka-TV
C60 Japanese TV cut up and pasted back together again.
008 INCA EYEBALL Inca Eyeball Split Up!
C60ish The shortest and most improbable songs you'll hear. Would you
believe they once supported Pavement?!
009 THE STUFFINGS Talk To Dragons (Best
Of) C60 Compilation of their favourite tracks from this
long-running American oddball outfit.
010 way-out: the sound of um!
C90 Serious noise compilation with Children At Play, Kjetil D. Brandsdal,
Sideboard Radiator, Culver, Expose Your Eyes, Cefodie, Lee Milan, Zarathustra,
Mlhest, Phlegm(UK), Shimmer, TUOB & Leigh Smith, The Schizoid Wikler's,
Labrador, The Speeding Peters, Hoom, Tenmoko, Melanchthon, The Infant
Cycle, Schmrtz, and Realm In Dreams. Full colour cover.
011 ELK Hung . . . C75 30
mins of top pop tunes and acoustic meanders, with a 45-minute casio
trawl on the flip.
012 i.eME A La Corde/Used
C30 Hushed songs using samples and varying instrumentation from France.
014 TWIG Trying To Be Like You
C45 Aching, ponderous, and fractured songs, akin to early Hood.
015 WARSER GATE Revered Lies Pt1
C45 Psychedelic Television-meets-Fall jams. One of Kylie's most well-received
bands.
016 WAGSTAFF Learning Process
C45 Joi is all alone with his recorder and guitar, someone save him.
017 FIBO-TRESPO 8.01% Action
C45 One long piece by "famous" Kjetil D Brandsdal and friend Bjerga,
a soundtrack to a flickering western, with tinny piano and tentative
guitar. Is Norway the new New Zealand?
018 SHIMMER s/t C30ish Collecting
two self-released tapes of solo guitar haze, sweet sounds that live
up to their name to soothe your aches and pains.
019 SPACEHOPPER Remixed/Rest In Paris
C90 The last tape ever, with all your favourites jiggered about, plus
a few oddities. A fitting end.
020 MLEHST Tonight's The Night
C90 One side of new chilling atmospherics and soundscapes and one
collecting some old favourites. Colour cover.
021 Croatia C60 Compilation
of noise and rock antics from Croatia assembled by Mario Kovac of Zarathustra.
About 20 bands in all. Neat packaging too.
022 WARSER GATE The Strenuously Silent
C30 Even better than before-twisted noise riffs and slow burning chaos.
023 FACTOR X I Do I Love You Kylie
C45 Manipulated atmospherics and songs from out-there, much liked by
Muckraker.
024 FIBO-TRESPO Middle Class Slobs Play
Improv. C45 One long churning improvised sound where
the hiss in between is the key, plus one extra. Even better than the
last one.
025 being minoguemous C60
Superb sampler compilation courtesy of Inner Psyche Productions with
Baddwagon, Scooter, Spo-it's, Terr, Inca Eyeball, and others.
026 MIKE LANDUCCI In Defense of Scary Bears
C90 Solo instrumentals from the man behind the excellent Black Bean
& Placenta Tape Club, incorporating analogue boop and loop hum. Colour
sleeve.
027 CRAYOLA SUMMER Return to Cow Palace
C30 Sweet 4-track songs from this Inner Psyche recording
star, wrapped in a full colour package.
028 ZARATHUSTRA Deca Dance
C60 Flipping from warped sample manipulation to atmospheric keyboard
playing, with Spanish jackhammers and noise crunch. From Croatia. Wrapped
in a handsome colour sleeve.
029 the May Queen in July
Stupidly I spent months putting this great compilation, a whole 120
minutes of mostly pop tunes, only to never release it. What a dick.
Great pop sounds from the likes of Crayola Summer, Girlboy Girl, Charlie
McAlister, Michelle Glaw, Father, Caleb Fraid, Warser Gate, I Hail Taxis,
Inca Eyeball, Mad Planets, Elk, Catkins of Jazz, Remora, Lush Mansions,
Fiftyholehead, Jalopy, Plundershop, Drekka, Southern Charm Pageant,
Hood, Werewolves On Hashish, and more. . . pure pop heaven. It has been
known for me to burn off CDRs of this on request, though I'm a bit dubious
of the ethics of this since I never actually sent copies to the bands
involved. Maybe I should.
030 EXPOSE YOUR EYES Scrapbook of Crap
C60 Far from its title, this tape avoids the relentless noise onslaught
that has become all too common, opting instead to go for variety and
imagination. From technoise juddering to distorted screeches, this is
his finest work to date.
031 ZEVON Paolex Sessions 93-95
C45 Like a nascent, more atonal Slint from this Italian band.
032 WARSER GATE Reached the Frequency Stage
C60 Another fine thirteen-tracker, this time wrapped in a rather fine
(if I say so myself) colour sleeve. This band are destined for great
things.
033 REYNOLS Dohdo Vehdohdo Rulo
C60 I'm rather pleased to have bagged this; this Argentinean band, aka
Burt Reynolds Ensemble, drift from a truly mournful lament over loose
drumming to sharp feedback groans. As good as their 10" on Matching
Head.
034 PARAQUAT DRINKERS £6.99 Blow Job
C90 The Harris/Joseph/Massey axis free-form their way through the Dead
C's Trapdoor Fucking Exit to awesome effect.
035 SOF TILLIN'S AND s/t C45 Leap-frogs
the noise competition, taking in a lo-fi techno collaboration with Wagstaff,
and some assistance from ShaunRobert, with chopping distortion, guitar,
and samples, never outstaying its welcome, and always keeping you interested.
A winner.
036 ONQ Nothing You Could Be Happy For
C20 Onco Galuppini's best: oozing alienation, the voice hidden behind
effects on a bed of silkily distorted guitar. Never has unhappiness
sounded so beautiful.
037 INCA EYEBALL One Pound Fifty C45
Re-release of to my mind Inca's finest hour thus far. As I said at the
time, "like the best bits of your favourite songs".
038 shingles C30 Compilation
of the best bits from the now deleted eight shingles from Ceramic Hobs,
Darwin, Thee Shrinkwrapped Genious, D.I.S., Catkin of Jazz, Glaring
Surge, Tartan Pillows, and The Huxleys.
039 DJ SATAN C60 Kylie goes clubbing!
Unlike any other Kylie tape, this is actually pretty credible-sounding
techno choons, well put together, and worthy of a white label or two.
Somehow I doubt this will ever appear.
040 ¡chupa diez vergas! C90
A re-issue of one of Chupa Verga's most popular tapes, featuring the
best of the first nine releases, mostly featuring ONQ, but also with
Jacopo Andreini, Alpaco & others. Superb guitar noise tunes: witness
the birth of something very special. £1.50/
041 LOLLYDOR Stress Sounds
C60 A collaboration between Phil Garner of Labrador and Karen Lollypop,
a meditation on the benefits of tinkering with your guitar while listening
to Pet Sounds. Colour cover.
042 ONQ Pan C60 Another re-issue
from Chupa Verga, one of ONQ's earliest releases, featuring explorations
on a Hawaiian theme. Colour inlay.
043 PLUNDERSHOP C60 This is so good
it should really be on CD, and hey look, it is now!. An entrancing mixture
of great songs and cut-up pieces of experimentation, all with a hazy
psychedelic feel, from Brantley Fletcher of Flaming Biscuit fame. Possibly
the best tape I've released so far. Colour cover.
044 FRANK PECK Acoustic Holocaust
C45 There's some great song-writing happening here. Devoid of the distractions
of percussion or other instruments, this is 10 tracks of pure folk balladry-not
the dreary, winsome kind-more like Dylan or Simon Joyner. Need I say
more?
045 M. NOMIZED/IQCM Ondulante Y Variable
Vol. 3 C60 A collaboration between France's ambient noisescaper
extraordinaire and the hitherto unknown to me IQCM.
046 LABRADOR AND DORA DOLL How to Survive
Your Early Twenties C45 Batters, clangs, buzzes, hisses,
thuds, and wails its way through seven examples of prime noise. I know
nothing about Dora Doll, but Labrador is one of the UK's best noise-dudes
there is, and this is the bomb.
047 FOOD Christmas Gifts for Everyone
C30 Like a lo-fi Beach Boys, with occcasional tinges of Belle & Sebastian's
frailty, this is an amazing collection of songs with lovely harmonies.
Particularly recommended for fans of Mazarin and the whole Elephant
6 thing. Food deserve to be huge.
Download: "west
coast"
048 FERNANDO Bocadillos Heart-stopping
ballads and sweet instrumentals from Argentinian Fernando. This is his
first tape and your chance to say you were 'there'. Or at least it was...
Download: "helen
hunt"
049 MY PLACE IN SPACE c2 = a2 + b2
C60 Rousing keyboard space-pop tunes from Darren, that certainly put
a smile on my face.
050 FIFTYHOLEHEAD Climax Tailings
C30 From Canada via Japan, Headbone's voice aches, but he's no bleeding
heart. Instead he sits down and writes great songs with his guitar,
blending it with looped samples, layers of instrumentation, and a taste
for sonic experimentation that's governed by a love for melody.
Download: "blank
stare tonight"
051 AGUR-K/FIBO-TRESPO split C60
Spine-tingling electronic noise from Sindre Bjerga's AGUR-K split with
Fibo-Trespo's peculiarly Norwegian minimalism.
052 UNIVERSAL INDIANS C45 Universal
Indians grace us with 45 minutes of screeching electronic noise, spooky
echos, garage guitars, and eerie silence. This follows their great split
CD with Ashtray Navigations and a tour with Neil Campbell.
053 1959 Fortune and Glory (on a Rainy Day)
C30 Chris Fischer has a way with three chords-these hand-held recordings
are heartfelt and wistful, softly whispered over melodies, and will
seep into your subconscious.
054 PRINCETON REVERBS COLONIAL @ the 40
Watt C45 Recorded at the reknowned club in Georgia on
a tour with fablefactory, this is a great set of heartfelt indie rock
tunes, tinged with the unexpected.
055 SHY RIGHTS MOVEMENT Greatest Hits
CDR/C60 A collection of their best tunes, this band are often compared
to people like Red House painters and American Music Club. And the songs
are the same kind of quality too. Never available.
056 ELECTROSCOPE/ECHO
IS YOUR LOVE split 7" Yussss! Finally, Kylie manages to get
some vinyl out, and it's brilliant. Electroscope come from Glasgow,
have released two albums and several singles already, and are impossible
to describe. "Like a late night rummage in a jumble sale" they say.
I say a kind of whimsical, folky, psychedelic, children's storytime,
radiophonic workshop male/female duo of sparkling originality and genius.
Oh yes. And those of you who have read previous catalogues will know
that Echo Is Your Love make me want to spurt sticky stuff all over Keanu
Reeves posters, they're so good. A subdued blend of Sonic Youth and
Blonde Redhead, the guitars strained then unleashed, tickling up and
down your spine, the vocals coming on like Empress or perhaps Electroscope.
I always wanted the first bit of vinyl to be really special, and I've
done it. Hurrah for me.
057 MANDORRIS Program Your Own Computer
CDR Those of you who fortunate enough to get a copy of Mandorris's LP
on Blackbean are in for a surprise and a treat. They sound totally different,
but still bloody brilliant. Where before they were lo-fi and droney,
they're now digital and bleepy beep-beep. Phil and Dan have discovered
computers and are running riot with them, flirting with Oval-esque experimentation,
Acceleradeck beats, and Transistor 6 fun. Electronic bliss. Never
really available thanks to my own stupidity - ask me and I might just
burn you a copy.
058 [MINMAE] [Expectorant Melodies]
CDR One of the best bands to come out of last year, [minmae]
revel in drones, submerged distortion, melancholy vocals, drunkenly
hazed guitars, and clattering drums. This release follows up their brilliant
split LP with Electroscope and accompanies their new CD Vorsachiang.
This is awesome. Never available, sorry Sean.
059 THE SCARS Sunken Ships Please
C60 If you've already heard the wonder that is San Diego's Minmae, then
you can't pass this up, for The Scars is Sean Brooks's pre-Minmae foray
into the music industry. Exploration's on a similar theme, with the
guitars a little spikier, more Wire-ish even. Never available - see
above.
060 WAGSTAFF I Dance Every Five Minutes
C90 Originally slated for release on Kylie's aborted off-shoot Shit
Tapes, Joincey settles in to his new home with a 90-minute opus. Indulging
detuned radio hiss and characteristic moroseness, Wagstaff also blesses
us with a unique David Beckham poster and photographs from his own private
collection. Never available.
061 DREKKA/[MINMAE] split 7" Never
released sadly.
062 INCA EYEBALL Leave the Country
7" A co-release with Betley Welcomes Careful Drivers, this is Inca's
first stereo release, and it is their finest. Never available via
Kylie, and I've never even seen a copy, thanks to the Royal Mail.
063 ECHO IS YOUR LOVE
Sheets of Blank Fucking Paper CD My
favourite Kylie release ever - great sprawling distorted guitar chaos
laced with ethereal beauty. Kylie's only 'proper' CD release too, co-released
with If Society.
ZINES
Kylie
#1 The first zine I did, way back in 1993. Featuring interviews with
Moose, Beatnik Filmstars, Pram, COMA, Mel Garside, Bleach, and Pram,
plus severely mis-guided rants and general adolescent angst and tomfoolery.
Kylie's
Catalogue
No, not a catalogue of Kylie goods, despite what the title says - Kylie's
Catalogue was a simple zine listing publication, designed to spread
the word about what other zines were out there. No reviews just the
basic info. I think the third and last issue listed somehting like 220
of the suckers. Would be hard pressed to list 20 today...
Speeder
#1 Interviews with Gene, Guided By Voices, Linus and I really can't
remember who else! Nor can I find any copies.
#2 48 pages with Stereolab, Moneyspider, Spare Snare, Murmur, Vaffan
Coulo, 70 Gwen Party, and Father, plus a guide to zine making, Serbian
scene report, and a ton of reviews.
#3 Interviews with Inca Eyeball, Warser Gate, Small Things, and Trembling
Blue Stars, plus life in Serbia report, contributions from Simon Morris,
Paul Wild, and Joincey, results of the top 10 LPs poll, Vic N'Dip's
recipe for baked beans on toast, large tape review section, and record
reviews. 40 pages.
#4 Interviews with Solex, Reynols, [minmae], Tore Mallaug of MykeDroner,
Mandorris (a short one), plus an overview of Very Good Records by Simon
Morris, a rant about pop, and a ton of reviews of everyone from Appliance
to Whistler. Those of you who have been able to check out the on-line
version will have seen most of this stuff before, as it essentially
compiles what was published on-line last year. Fifty-six sexy A5 pages,
printed with black ink on 80 gsm white paper, except for the cover which
is on Flying Colours no. 26, by a Xerox Docutech, carefully bound with
little strips of metal by me using a long arm stapler from Staples of
Scottsdale, Arizona.
And
that's it.
